New Starters - Reception 2020

Welcome to School!

 

We look forward to meeting you in September, but until then here is some information about starting school.

What Will I Learn?

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) This is the stage of education for children from birth to the end of the Reception Year at a Primary School and it prepares children for learning in their future school career. There are three ‘Prime areas’ which are essential for a child’s healthy development. These three areas are: communication and language; physical development; and personal, social and emotional development. There are four other ‘specific areas’ of learning and development - literacy; mathematics; understanding the world; and expressive arts and design. At the end of Reception, it will be reported as to whether your child is at emerging, expected or exceeding for each area of the EYFS.

 

Some children will say, “I didn’t do anything today, just play”. We believe that most learning takes place through play around a purposeful theme to enhance and encourage your child’s physical, emotional and social development. The development in learning for your child will happen through his/her own initiated activities and some adult led or directed activities. These activities include sand and water play, creative activities, themes and projects to promote awareness of the diversity of the world about us, books and music which encourage speaking and listening skills, and a chance to experiment with dough, paste and paper, puzzles and construction toys, to name a few! Do not be concerned if your child does not have anything to ‘bring home with them’ at the end of the week. They could have been doing something that could not be taken home, like making patterns in the sand, pouring and measuring water, sequencing with sizes, colours or shapes, moulding dough, or simply making a new friend. The children’s learning will centre around topics which will usually span a half term. Our planning is flexible and responds to children’s significant interests and seasonal events.

 

A Day in the Life of Reception

 

No day is ever the same but we try and follow this timetable.

8:45-8:50 - Children enter school and begin fine motor activities

9:00 - Registration & Welcome songs

9:10 - Phonics

10:00 - Child Initiated learning and adult led activities

11:45 - Concept cat

12:20 - Lunch

1:10 - Registration and Number skills/Listening games

1:30 - Adult led activities and Child Initiated Learning

2:45 - Story time & Marvellous Me

3:10 - Home Time

 

What do I Wear?

 

School uniform consists of;

Dark grey trousers or dark grey pinafore dress/skirt

White polo shirt

Red jumper or cardigan with logo

Dark grey shorts or red striped/checked dress (for Summer)

Grey/black socks or red/grey tights

Black shoes

 

What do I Need to Bring?

 

Each day, you must bring;

A water bottle and your book bag, this will be used to bring home reading books, work and letters.

 

 

At the start of each half term you will need

A PE Kit (this is a red polo shirt, black shorts and black pumps)

A pair of Wellies
